Ebay is flooded with auctions that attempt to cash in on the allure and mystique of the rich and famous - but none as shameless as "celebrity" owned cars. Is it worth more money if the previous owner was famous - especially when the owner is an admitted habitual drunk and pill popper?
The band Green Day was morphed into a cohesive unit in the early 90s at a non-profit East Bay Punk music club in the City of Berkeley that is known as 924 Gilman St. The band rocketed to fame when their breakthrough album Dookie (1994) was picked up by a major label. According to interview with front man Billie Joe Armstrong the band members were strung out on all sorts of drugs on a regular basis — not surprising —but what is surprising is to see a former !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! in a two page Rolling Stone spread. Find Billie Joe Armstrong's automatic equipped !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for sale in St Louis, MO bidding on ebay for $19,001 with 4 days to go from motoeXotica.
This car was featured in January of this year as a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and the seller later sent us a followup message saying that the car had sold to Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day. Actually, it was picked up by one of his "people" but regardless we were pumped to see a DT feature heading to a genuine celebrity (doctordel's 1800ES purchase notwithstanding). Read the entire Rolling Stone article with a pick of Mr Armstrong rolling in his Tii and talking about being stoned !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
We have even heard internet chatter about folks seeing the giant black haired guitarist driving this car around near his home (or at least someone claimed to live near him..yaddy-yah). Anyway, we were looking forward to pics from the previous seller to do a story about it, but time marches on and we never got any pics/followup until this one appeared back for sale on ebay from one of our favorite mid west sellers MotoeXotica. These guys have the most eclectic collection of awesome stuff sold with no nonsense auctions with no reserve, no shills and excellent photos.
Sometime between when the car was sold earlier this year and today...a..gasp...automatic transmission has been retrofitted into this Tii. The basic 2002 was available in with an auto, but the Tii (touring internationale injected) was always sold new with a 4-speed manual. One can only assume that Mr Armstrong has tendonitis in his guitar strumming hand and it makes shifting difficult or he always needs the left foot to keep the beat while driving - because swapping a slushbox into a Tii is not an easy offense to excuse. It could have also been a car purchased specifically for a one-time video or photoshoot - the auto being swapped in convenience during the filming?
The BMW 2002 Tii is powered by a 2.0 liter inline-4 with fuel injection that puts out 130 horsepower and this one is equipped with an MSD ignition and an intake plenum from a 1973 Tii - but otherwise appears stock and clean. BMW 2002Tii's have been selling for insane money recently and we don't expect this one to be any different.
The paint looks decent in the photos and is clean with the exception of a few rock chips and trim piece installation dings - which brings us to the next issue. This Tii was originally sold from the factory with a Malaga red paint - as witnessed by the peeling non-original baikal sticker, blue overspray on the smog sticker along with some of the original paint appearing where the sticker is disintegrating as well as the red paint appearing along the jack points. There is undoubtedly a plate/sticker somewhere on the car that lists the OEM color, but our bet is you will see an 021 paint code.
Final thoughts; This is a tricky one. We'd love to gush nostalgic about a child of the 70s who made it big and wanted to own a car from his youth (probably something his parents drove him around in as a kid)...but...and this is a big but...why did Mr Armstrong get his "people" to find him a clean 2002Tii, swap in an auto, put some Miata sized Panasports with spacers and then sell the car within a year? Sure the car is now worth more than before he owned it, but I don't think a guy like BJA is in the business of flipping cars for profit, so the conclusion must be that he didn't like it. If a wealthy punk rock star didn't like it when it was one of a dozen cars in his garage, why would you want it?
See a cooler celebrity ride for less? !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

Post-Dookie, wouldn't this take value away from the car?
Also, floor speakers and automatic transmission? on a 2002?
i'll give the seller 5k for it

If you don't like this car you would be considered an American Idiot. I mean...a few bits look like Dookie, but overall it seems to be well sorted and not really a Basket Case.
So do you have the time....to drop a few bucks on it...then drive it down the Blvd of Broken Dreams? You take a Longview and you may see a sign Welcoming you to Paradise. Just don't Kill the DJ...or else you will end up in jail.
So go buy this car...and have the Time of Your Life.

Automatic < The slushbox conversion is rough. Getting a 2002tii in that shape is crazy... why did someone have to ruin it by converting it to auto? This car looks in such good shape, and tii's are so hard to come by, that if I had the money I'd have a hard time not bidding on this, even knowing I'd have to revert it to a manual. No. warndorsement? Nope. Automatic. No thanks. Maybe some pills and alcohol might be hidden in stash spots for the cops. On a side note: He doesn't look like the kinda guy that would drive a classic BMW I know sometimes I spell Jerry with a G... and an I! AHAHHAHA!!!
That's a nice gear lev...
Unless Bob Dylan or Eric Clapton or Rick Rubin, set foot or sat on it not interested! When I Come Around to the idea it's not so bad. I may be in the Minority but there don't seem to be too many Warning signs. The high school kid from my block who was a few years older than me that used jello to spike his mohawk a foot off is head drove a beat up 2002 so I'd say the model has punk credentials but Billie Joe's looks a little too nice and polished to be legitly punk. The only way to know for sure... So automatic tii's are the minority? I guess you'd have to be stoned or high to put an automatic in a Tis. Oh its for that Green Day guy? Makes sense. The speakers make me wanna murder. If you look closely at the original ad you can see the speakers were already there. A dead pedal that gives you a foot massage? Complisult.
I'm OK with the Panasports, but he
converted
it to a slushbox? Fucking hell...
What. Really? I would've never guessed because they look horribly out of proportion, and they also block the space I use for resting my left foot while cruising. Anyways, I find it hard to fathom that the celebrity factor jacks up the price. As I see it, some has-been rocker ruined a classic. Price should go down, but I guess Celebrity economics work differently than regular economics. The only acceptable transmission conversion on a Tii is to drop in a 5-speed from a 320i (they originally came with a 4-speed). Billie Joe From Green Day Owned This BMW 2002Tii For 10 Months So? Does that make the car any more (or less) special? If you buy this, will he come over on the weekends and play Scattegories with you? That's not a speaker. It's the clutch. A punk with a BMW...? H0pefully the owner of this Cutlass will buy it. I laughed too hard at this. Or the dogleg 5 speed from a 323i....
I don't care how many other people are saying this but…..he
converted a 2002tii to
auto.
Thankfully, all of the horrible changes Mr. Green Day (or a PO) did to this beautiful roundie 2002 can be reversed. 1) That E30 automatic tranny can be swapped with an original M10 4 speed (a tranny that is so plentiful I got my replacement one for free) 2) That wood nardi steering wheel should be swapped out for a vintage momo or at least an original BMW wheel. 3) And those gawdy, flashy, oversized rims can be swapped out for something more a bit more tasteful. Thankfully, the engine bay looks very original. The last thing the vintage car world needs it more modified Tii's. That Kugelfischer mechanical fuel pump obviously isn't being made anymore and a rebuilt one will nock you back a few thousand dollars. A carb'ed 02 is a fantastic base to play with a build your own tailored machine. But the Tii motor hates being messed with an only runs properly in fully stock mod. Hilarious. COTD I'll go on record and say (to me) green day is the worst band in history. They are so whiny and their music is just terrible. It pains me to say that I loved his band when I was like 14. But that car is awesome. I'd love an auto 2002. And it's even in my state. STL has a BUNCH of crazy, awesome, rare cars. "Oh my god, I just matched my revs! Hold on, I have to go rub one out now." That's what you sound like. That's what every person who knocks auto transmissions sound like. Makes me want to do the manual to auto swap on my E30 even more now. Are you the bidder who just raised the price of that thing up to $25k? Jesus, $25k?! That's a lot of dough for a car I'd be nervous to be in during a K9 Police search. "Really, officer, it's not mine, let me tell you a fun story about this car's history..." What? It's not about matching revs and who can be the most Jalop. It's about ruining a classic machine with garbage parts because the new owner is a stoner bonghead with no respect. Don't be a moron. Needs MOAR pedals. The front clip is not from a Tii. Notice the poorly patched intake hole that would normally look like this on a non Tii Still a nice car but not 26k worth. I was tripping out on a recent Mecum (anaheim 2013) auction in which a non Tii sold for 27k... Glad to say I own a roundie :) That guy has a different preference than you so he's a disrespectful "bonghead." Okay.
You know this is a site for car enthusiasts, right? And the celeb in question has made the car worse during his ownership? (And yes, unoriginal modifications to a well kept classic is often thought of as disrespectful)
Considering Billy Joe is a self proclaimed "punk" it's kinda the opposite of more special. He should be ashamed of it.

Also, BJ's substance abuse is well documented. I think,
stoner
, is the kinder choice of words.
So yeah. "Okay".
